BAVS is committed to supporting scholarship at every level.

The British Association for Victorian Studies (BAVS) is committed to the support of its members’ activities such as conferences and events. As part of its recent assessment of BAVS resources and their strategic importance to the field of Victorian studies, as outlined in the BAVS Future Directions document (2010; approved by the AGM in Glasgow in September), the Executive Committee is pleased to announce a revised funding grants scheme. This new stream, the BAVS Funding Grant, replaces the former Open Conference and Postgraduate Conference grants. It is designed to be flexible in its support for members, and the maximum grant amount has been increased from £200 (£250 for the former Postgraduate Conference Grants) to £400. The Association and its Executive remain committed to the development of postgraduate students, and it is anticipated that two postgraduate organised/led events will be funded each academic session.

The Sally Ledger Memorial Travel Bursary is named in honour of the distinguished Victorianist and supporter of BAVS, Professor Sally Ledger, who died in 2009. In recognition of Sally’s commitment and dedication to her postgraduate students, the BAVS Executive decided to establish a fund in her honour. The bursary is for £500 and supports a UK postgraduate to travel to the NAVSA annual meeting. It is part of BAVS’ ongoing commitment to postgraduates and professional experience and training for the next generation of Victorianists. The award is only made to a student whose application to NAVSA’s conference programme committee has been deemed successful in the competitive process to deliver a paper at the NAVSA event on the grounds of highest academic quality and relevance to the conference theme. The Executive Committee does, from time to time, receive funding support requests which fall outside the activities usually supported under the BAVS Funding Grant. Such enquiries should made to the Secretary in the first instance, and advice will be provided on the details required for a full consideration of a proposal and the timeframe within the cycle of Executive meetings.
